Medical secretaries who won a major pay dispute five years ago have been ordered to reapply for their own jobs as part of a pounds 20m hospital cost-cutting plan.

As part of Sunderland City Hospitals' financial recovery plan, the 150 workers will be interviewed for 120 posts, with the remaining 30 being forced to take lower-paid jobs for lesser- skilled employees.
