IN chaos theory, the "butterfly effect" explains potentially large changes that can occur as a result of the smallest and seemingly unrelated of events or actions.

This rather aptly summarises the chaos that has occurred recently in the European air transport sector: a small volcanic eruption on Iceland, an island 1,332 miles from the European coastline, produced a cloud of ash that despite posing no danger to animal life on the European mainland, forced several nations to shut down their airports.
