Former Durham Police chief superintendent and Government advisor on crime Lord Mackenzie, said yesterday: "In my view the disqualification should stand. This was clearly an horrific incident which resulted in the death of an innocent 12-year-old girl.

"To be banned from the roads for 10 years is perfectly reasonable. In my opinion I think this man was fortunate not to receive a longer ban.
