It was a day of mixed fortunes for The Journal 40 companies. Greggs, the Newcastle baker, posted a gain for the fourth day. Shares climbed 78p to close at 3900p. Northern Rock also had a good day, the shares adding 33p to end at 1175p on takeover speculation in the banking sector.
