DESIGNED to showcase British racing, Champions Day at Ascot is now vulnerable to the great whip debate and the fallout from the new draconian rules implemented this week.

What timing by the British Horseracing Authority. Wouldn't you have thought such a drastic change in the number of times a jockey can hit a horse and the consequences that follow should have been kept on hold until the start of a new season? Not only have they introduced them without a trial period, they chose a week when at the end of it is the most important fixture of the year in this country.
