Authorities in the North are being forced into setting up controversial city academies by the threat of losing funding for school improvements, a union will claim today(WED).

A report by the public services union Unison says councils are being blackmailed into accepting academies with the threat that their inclusion in the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme could be withdrawn. The BSF programme is bringing pounds 500m into the North-East for new school buildings, with schemes in Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside in the first wave of funding.
