Leaders of Newcastle Council were accused last night of a "disgraceful" attitude to art in the city which could damage its reputation for culture.

Labour councillor Ged Bell warned against the ruling Liberal Democrat group adopting the same stance which saw the party vote against installing the Angel of the North in Gateshead.
