A PLEA from a German visitor to be granted political asylum in Northumberland and a question about recycling toenail clippings in Cumbria are among the bizarre queries which council staff in the North have had to deal with in the past year.

A survey by the Local Government Association, which represents 350 councils in England and Wales, has revealed how some calls leave staff struggling to keep a straight face or scratching their heads in bewilderment. A German visitor presented himself at a Northumberland County Council reception desk to claim political asylum.
