An accident in which a police car on a 999 call hit a male pedestrian has been referred to independent watchdogs.

The accident happened at 6.10pm on Monday in Old Durham Road, Gateshead, near the High Fell Workingmen's Club. Last night the 24- year-old remained in hospital, although his injuries are not said to be life-threatening. Police have repeated an appeal for witnesses to contact motor patrol officers on (0191) 221-9540.
