Buzzard Is Seriously Injured in Shooting ; Police Issue Appeal for Information
ABIRD of prey has suffered "serious" injuries after it was shot while out flying in Northumberland. The young buzzard, which had hatched this year, was sprayed with pellets during the shooting in Alnwick. Officers from the RSPB were called to Broome Wood, near Alnwick Moor, where they found the bird with a bullet hole through its left wing. The young common buzzard also suffered injuries to its body.
Children of Workers Are 'Unhealthier'
MOTHERS who work raise unhealthier children than those who stay at home, researchers said today. Children whose mothers are employed are more likely to be driven to school, watch TV, snack on fizzy drinks and eat too few portions of fruits and vegetables, a study found.

THE flagship East Coast rail franchise is set to be renationalised within weeks and could stay in public hands for up to two years, the Transport Secretary has revealed. Lord Adonis also promised a "firm statement" on high-speed rail links by the next general election - which must be held by June - as North East business and political leaders push for the region to be included in a proposed North-South line.
THE North East's car industry was handed a pounds 100m boost yesterday as Lord Mandelson announced the "bangers for cash" scheme is being extended. Sunderland-based car maker Nissan has enjoyed a sales surge and been able to employ new staff thanks to the UK scrappage scheme and equivalents in Europe. Last month, the company joined with other automotive firms in calling for the scheme to be extended amid fears that funding could run out within weeks.
