The Forecast for Our Holiday [ ... ]
THE forecast for our holiday in Cornwall was dreadful. Rain, rain and more rain. Determined that we'd still enjoy ourselves, we set off with waterproofs and wellies for keeping dry plus books and our faithful old Travel Scrabble to entertain. Oh, and a few bottles of something strong to keep out the chill.

IF I had to rank the areas that I think most concern clients about their buildings, then at the top of the list would be dampness and, at the bottom, the drains. The strange thing is you can tolerate dampness in any form, other than flooding, for quite a few months or even years but a blocked drain quickly demands attention. Similarly the cost of rectifying dampness is generally not too expensive but the cost of digging up a drain and relaying it can be very pricey and messy.
AWARDROBE brings two of my favourite things - fashion and furniture together. Wardrobes don't always get the credit they deserve. Aside from the bed I'd say they were the most important item in the bedroom - unless of course you are lucky enough to have a walk-in wardrobe, in which case I am very jealous. However, wardrobes can be a burden, especially in smaller rooms. Finding something which a. fits, b. you like and c. has enough room for everything is a bit of a challenge.

LATE summer-flowering bulbs such as dahlias, crocosmias and lilies bring a burst of colour in the borders when a lot of other plants are past their best. However, their maintenance can become a chore in the autumn, when many will need to be dug up and stored . Busy gardeners may not have the time or inclination to dig up bulbs, clean and dry them off and store until next year. However, there are summer-flowering bulbs which are happy to stay in the ground and will perform in subsequent years,...
