THE Government is poised to hand over pounds 300m to the region for a massive upgrade of the Metro system, The Journal can reveal. Last night Government transport bosses remained tight-lipped on the project, but insiders said an announcement on the deal was imminent.

Man Dies After Being Swept Out to Sea
A MAN died when he got into difficulties and was swept out to sea last night. The tragedy happened at 5.30pm at Hendon promenade in Sunderland, when a 37-year-old man was seen struggling in the North Sea.
Pounds 10.8m Outlay On Four 'Extra Care' Schemes for Elderly in North
THE Government has announced pounds 10.8m of funding to build new flats for old and vulnerable people in the North East. Four "extra care" housing schemes will be built in the region aimed at enabling the elderly and those with dementia and long-term conditions to live in their own homes.

THE funeral of a former cricketer who died on holiday in Portugal will be held this week. David Morley, 64, of Ryton, Gateshead, suffered a head injury last month during a golfing break in the Vilamoura area of the Algarve.

RESEARCH carried out at Durham University has suggested that magic tricks should be studied more closely to gain a deeper knowledge of the way human beings think and act. A new study has stated that elements of human cognition and perception that are not yet fully understood by scientists may receive greater insight by analysing tricks and techniques used by magicians.

TRAIN passengers could reach Paris in just four hours if a high- speed rail network is linked to Newcastle.
